Enhanced Well-Being Through Expressive Art Workshop

Aug 17, 2016 | Archive

Contributed by Alice Palen, Counseling for Enhanced Well-Being

Explore a favorite quote in words and images. Transform it into art that expresses its unique meaning to you.

“Gifts at the end of branches: Haskap.” This is the quote I will be exploring to create my personal image. Haskap is the word the ancient Ainu people of Japan used to name berries. They called them gifts at the end of branches. When I went berry picking, Haskap presented itself. I was reminded of my gratitude for nature’s bounty and the small beautiful things in my life. Join me in my workshop to take time to appreciate and focus on something that inspires you.

What We’ll Be Doing: I will lead a guided meditation to help you explore thoughts and feelings from a quote you have chosen. We will then use collage, pastels and colored pencils to create an image which reflects the personal meaning the quote holds for you.

What To Bring: A quote that is meaningful to you. It could be from a cherished friend or relative, a book, a song, your imagination or a Chinese fortune cookie! I will also have some for you to browse through.

Materials Provided: If you have favorite collage material bring it along. Feel free to bring a journal if you want to incorporate journaling.

No artistic experience needed. Honest.

Space is limited. Register early. Deadline is Wed. August 16.

A Word About Me: I am inspired by the small beauties that surround me and the power of art to enhance my own well-being and that of others. My formal art training was at the University of New Mexico where I earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Art, cum laude. I am a counselor with a master’s degree in counseling from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. I have provided opportunities for individuals to enhance their self-awareness through expressive art and have used it with groups including young adults in job skill development programs, victims of domestic violence, individuals struggling with recovery from substance addiction and youth in foster care.
